Description
Comforting Polish cabbage rolls filled with ground beef and rice enveloped in tender cabbage leaves and baked in a savory tomato sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 can (10.5 oz) tomato soup
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil.
- Remove the core from the cabbage and blanch the leaves in boiling water for about 2-3 minutes.
- Transfer the leaves to a colander and let them cool.
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, cooked rice, diced onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Take a blanched cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center, then roll tightly.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and spread some tomato sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
- Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish and cover with remaining tomato soup, sauce, brown sugar, and lemon juice.
- Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour, then remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Notes
Use freshly cooked rice for better texture. Feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices to enhance flavor.
