Description
A comforting and flavorful bowl combining seasoned ground beef, sautéed vegetables, and rich cheese sauce over fluffy rice, reminiscent of traditional Philly cheesesteaks.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter (or plant-based butter)
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 4 cups cooked rice
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1-2 teaspoons garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half (or dairy-free creamer)
- 1 cup white cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Cook until browned, then drain excess grease.
- Lower the heat to medium in the same skillet. Add one tablespoon of butter and sauté the red onion and bell peppers for 2-3 minutes until softened, then remove from the skillet.
- In a separate saucepan, melt two tablespoons of butter. Whisk in the flour and minced garlic to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the half-and-half until smooth and thickened. Stir in the cheddar cheese, ground mustard, and season with salt and pepper.
- Layer the cooked rice, ground beef, and sautéed vegetables in bowls. Pour the cheese sauce on top and serve.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for the cheese sauce to prevent clumping. Customize with different proteins or toppings as desired.
