Description
Delightful homemade cinnamon rolls featuring soft dough and a sweet cinnamon filling, topped with cream cheese frosting.
Ingredients
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp.) Rapid Rise Instant Yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 egg, at room temperature
- 2/3 cup light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
- 4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
- ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 – 3 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- In a stand mixer, combine 2 cups flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt on low speed.
- Heat milk and butter until warm, then pour into the flour mixture along with the egg. Beat until combined and then increase speed to high for 2 minutes.
- Switch to the dough hook and add 1 ½ cups flour. Knead until combined, then add the remaining cup of flour until the dough pulls away from the sides and forms a ball.
- Knead on medium-low until smooth, about 10 minutes. Transfer dough to an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
- For the filling, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
- Roll the risen dough into a rectangle (12×18 inches). Spread soft butter, sprinkle brown sugar mixture evenly, then roll tightly into a log and seal the seam.
- Cut into 12 rolls and place in a greased pan lined with parchment paper. Cover and allow to rise again for about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake rolls for 30 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly.
- For the frosting, combine cream cheese, room temperature butter, powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, vanilla, and a pinch of salt in a mixer. Beat until fluffy and spread over warm rolls.
Notes
Letting the dough rise in a warm environment enhances the texture. Customize the filling with nuts or fruits for variations.
