Description

A gloriously sweet and tangy glazed apple slab pie, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons cold water
  • 6 cups thinly sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a sheet pan.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough in half, shape each half into discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Roll out one disc to fit the prepared sheet pan and place it inside.
  6. In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Pour this apple mixture over the crust.
  7. Roll out the second disc and place it over the apples, sealing the edges. Cut slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden.
  9. Let it cool before glazing.
  10. For the glaze, whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth, and drizzle over the cooled pie before serving.

Notes

Use a pastry cutter for cutting in the butter to achieve the right texture. Allow the pie to cool before adding the glaze for better presentation.
