Description

A delightful, egg-free version of the classic French toast made with thick slices of bread, milk, and cornstarch for a light and crispy texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 6 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter
  • 6-10 slices of thick-sliced bread

Instructions

  1. In a large, flat-bottomed bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, sugar, cinnamon, and 1 cup of milk until the cornstarch dissolves.
  2. Stir in the remaining milk and vanilla extract to form the egg-free batter.
  3. Melt 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet or on a griddle over medium heat.
  4. Dip each slice of bread quickly into the batter, coating both sides without soaking too long, and place in the skillet.
  5. Cook each slice for 2 to 3 minutes on one side until golden brown; then flip and cook for another 2 to 4 minutes until both sides are golden.
  6. Re-butter the skillet as needed and repeat until all bread slices are cooked.
  7. Serve warm with maple syrup and toppings of your choice like berries or whipped cream.

Notes

Use high-quality, thick-sliced bread for better flavor. Experiment with spices like nutmeg or almond extract.
