Description

A comforting and indulgent casserole featuring layers of ground beef, tender potatoes, and gooey cheese, perfect for gatherings or family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5–6 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella (optional, for extra meltiness)
  • 1 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing the dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease your 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
  3. Brown the ground beef with the chopped onion in a skillet until fully cooked.
  4. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  5. Incorporate the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and paprika into the mixture, cooking together briefly.
  6. Whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk in a bowl until smooth.
  7. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased dish.
  8. Spread half of the beef mixture over the potatoes.
  9. Pour half of the sauce over the beef and sprinkle with 1 cup of cheddar cheese.
  10. Repeat the layers with remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and sauce, finishing with last of the cheddar and optional mozzarella.
  11. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.
  13. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding vegetables like spinach or bell peppers, and try using a mix of cheeses.
