Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra as needed)
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F and prepare a baking sheet by dusting it with flour.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir until fully incorporated.
- Add the chopped herbs and shredded cheddar cheese, folding them gently into the dry mixture.
- Pour in the buttermilk and stir until the dough comes together.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and form it into a ball, kneading lightly until smooth.
- Shape the dough into a 7-inch circle, transfer it to the baking sheet, and dust the top with more flour.
- Score a cross into the top of the dough, cutting about ½ inch deep.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 375°F and continue baking for an additional 30 to 35 minutes, until fully cooked.
- After baking, wrap the soda bread in a tea towel to cool.
Notes
For best results, let the buttermilk sit at room temperature before using to ensure a better reaction with baking soda.
