Ingredients

  • 12 slices of French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk (360 ml)
  • 1/4 cup honey (60 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2.5 g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (0.5 g)
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (30 g)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, melted (30 g)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (12 g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.5 g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. Arrange the slices of French bread in the baking dish in a single layer, overlapping slightly if necessary.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, honey, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all are soaked.
  6. Layer the sliced apples evenly over the bread.
  7. Sprinkle chopped walnuts over the apples.
  8. Drizzle melted butter over the top of the casserole.
  9. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar with a pinch of cinnamon, and sprinkle it over the top.
  10. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and apples are tender.
  13. Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Consider using whole wheat or whole grain bread slices in place of French bread for a healthier twist.
  • Experiment with different apple varieties like Granny Smith or Fuji to play with sweetness and tartness levels.
  • Add a touch of maple syrup or a hint of nutmeg to the egg mixture for an extra burst of flavor.
