Ingredients

  • 350 grams (12 oz (340 g)) of Beef Strips
  • 1 Piece of Organic Eggs
  • 60 grams of Corn starch
  • 5 grams of Baking soda
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) of Black pepper
  • 3 tbsp (45 ml) of Vegetable oil
  • 1 Piece of Brown onion
  • 40 grams of Spring onion
  • 1 Piece of Red pepper
  • 15 ml of Rice vinegar
  • 20 ml of Dark soy sauce
  • 24 grams of Ketchup
  • 60 ml of Sweet chili sauce
  • 30 grams of Tomato paste
  • 10 grams of Ginger garlic paste
  • 10 grams of White sugar
  • 2 grams of Chili flakes
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) of Vegetable oil
  • 150 grams (5.3 oz (150 g)) of Jasmine rice
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) of Salt
  • 300 ml of Water
  • 15 grams of Fresh coriander
  • 5 grams of Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Wash the jasmine rice thoroughly. Place it in a pot with a lid, add some salt and the specified amount of water, then bring it to a boil on high heat. Once it starts boiling, lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer for 10-12 minutes until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Once done, take it off the heat but keep it covered until you’re ready to serve.
  2. While the rice is cooking, peel and thinly slice the brown onion. Cut the spring onion into fine slices. Remove the seeds from the red pepper and slice it into thin strips. In a small bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, dark soy sauce, ketchup, sweet chili sauce, tomato paste, ginger garlic paste, white sugar, and a pinch of chili flakes to create your chili sauce.
  3. Dry the beef strips using a paper towel. In a large bowl, combine the egg with the beef strips. Add corn starch to the same bowl, season it with black pepper, and mix in the baking soda to form a batter that fully coats the beef.
  4. Warm a large non-stick pan with enough vegetable oil to coat the bottom over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the beef in batches and fry for 3-5 minutes until the outer layer is thick and very crispy. Once done, remove the beef from the pan, drain excess oil, and place it on a plate lined with paper towels. Discard any remaining oil from the pan, wipe it clean, and set it aside.
  5. Reheat the cleaned pan over medium-high heat with a little more vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced onion and red pepper. Stir-fry them for 3-4 minutes until they start to soften. Pour in the chili sauce and let it reduce slightly for about a minute. Then, add the crispy beef and spring onions, stirring everything to coat it well in the sauce, and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  6. In the meantime, pick the leaves off the fresh coriander. Serve the cooked rice and crispy chili beef on plates. Sprinkle with the coriander leaves and sesame seeds as a garnish.

Notes

  • Marinate beef strips in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, and ginger for 30 minutes before coating in batter for enhanced flavor.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pan when frying beef strips to achieve a crispy, golden brown texture.
  • Adjust the amount of chili flakes in the sauce to personalize the level of spiciness to your preference.

Mastering Crispy Chilli Beef Rice

Fundamentals

To create the perfect Crispy Chilli Beef Rice, understanding the fundamental components is essential. This dish combines the rich flavors of beef, the tanginess of chili sauce, and the softness of jasmine rice. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in achieving a balance of taste and texture.

The key to this recipe is the preparation of the beef. By coating it in a mixture of egg, corn starch, and baking soda, you ensure a crispy exterior once fried. Meanwhile, the sauce, made with rice vinegar, dark soy sauce, and sweet chili sauce, complements the beef with a sweet and spicy kick.

Preparation/setup

Start by preparing the jasmine rice. Wash it thoroughly and cook it with salt and water until tender. While the rice cooks, thinly slice the brown onion and red pepper, and prepare the spring onion for garnishing. Mixing the chili sauce ingredients in advance allows you to focus on cooking the beef to perfection.

Ensure your beef strips are dry before coating them with the egg and corn starch mixture. This step is crucial for achieving that desired crispy texture. Prepare your pan with vegetable oil, ready to fry the beef until it reaches a golden brown crispiness.

Perfecting the Crispy Chilli Beef

Technique

Executing the right frying technique is essential to perfect Crispy Chilli Beef Rice. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan over medium-high heat, ensuring it’s hot enough to crisp the beef without burning it. Fry the beef in batches to prevent overcrowding, which could lead to steaming rather than frying.

Once the beef is crispy, remove it from the pan and let it drain on paper towels. This step is necessary to remove excess oil, ensuring the beef remains crispy when combined with the sauce. After cleaning the pan, stir-fry the onions and red peppers until they soften, then add the chili sauce and beef for a final toss.

Crispy Chilli Beef Rice

Tips/tricks

To enhance the flavor profile of your Crispy Chilli Beef Rice, consider adding a pinch of chili flakes for extra heat. If you prefer a milder dish, reduce the amount of ginger garlic paste. Adjusting these elements allows you to tailor the dish to your personal taste preferences.

For an extra crispy texture, double-fry the beef strips. After the initial fry, let them cool slightly before frying a second time. This technique ensures maximum crunchiness, making each bite satisfying and delicious.

Refining Your Crispy Chilli Beef Rice

Perfecting results

Achieving the perfect Crispy Chilli Beef Rice requires attention to detail. Ensure each component is cooked to its ideal state, from the fluffy jasmine rice to the crispy beef. The sauce should be well-balanced, providing a harmonious blend of sweet, spicy, and umami flavors.

Make sure to taste the sauce before adding it to the beef. Adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more sugar for sweetness or vinegar for tanginess. This step guarantees that the sauce complements the crispy beef and rice perfectly.

Troubleshooting/variations

If the beef isn’t as crispy as desired, consider adjusting the frying temperature or technique. Ensure the oil is hot enough before adding the beef. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water to thin it out, ensuring it coats the beef evenly.

For a lighter version, consider using less oil or an air fryer to achieve a similar level of crispiness without deep frying. You can also experiment with additional vegetables like zucchini or broccoli to add more nutrients to the dish, similar to this Healthy Zucchini Beef Stir Fry.

Encourage diners to mix the ingredients on their plates, allowing the flavors to meld together with each bite. The vibrant colors and enticing aroma make this dish as visually appealing as it is tasty, inviting everyone to dig in and enjoy.
